GMAT Prep SC question

Following is a question from GMAT prep

In 1713 , Alexander Pope began his translation of the Iliad,a work that,taking him seven years until completion ,and that literary critic Samuel Johnson,Pope's contemporary ,pronounced the greatest translation in any language

a)his translation of the Iliad ,a work that ,taking him seven years until completion ,and that literary critic Samuel Johnson ,Pope's contemporary ,pronounced

b)his translation of the Iliad,a work that took seven years to complete and that literary critic Samuel Johnson, Pope's contemporary,pronounced

I am totally clueless as to why answer is B
any help would be highly appreciated

c,d,e are eliminated as there is no antecedent for the pronoun "it".
a is incorrect as the present participle is incorrectly used. We know that the work is completed and hence we shall use a simple past.
