Help on abbreviation

by slr257 Fri Jan 04, 2013 10:07 pm

This is a SC1000 question:

Research during the past several decades on the nature of language and the processes that produce and make it understandable has revealed great complexity instead of underlying simplicity.
(A) that produce and make it understandable has revealed great complexity instead of underlying simplicity
(B) of producing and understanding it have revealed not underlying simplicity but great complexity
(C) by which it is produced and understood has revealed not underlying simplicity but great complexity
(D) by which it is produced and understood have revealed great complexity rather than underlying simplicity
(E) by which one produces and understands it have revealed great complexity instead of underlying simplicity

The answer is A. But I think "produce" should be followed by "it", otherwise, this sounds like "produce it understandable". Is this fine in English? Thanks!

unfortunately we can't give you any help on this question, because the question itself is flawed in a way that you won't see on the GMAT. please understand that using practice questions from dubious sources can actually hurt your performance, and be careful which problem sources you use..

Thank you very much for your reply. May I know what the flaw is?

no. there are probably subtle flaws i haven't even seen yet, and i don't want you to think just because i point out a couple of problems that the rest of the problem is valid. just do yourself a favor and stick with problems you know are legit, and in particular stay as far away as possible from this particular source! :)
