Help Please

by Nadia.Marston Tue Oct 29, 2013 2:42 pm

I am going through the Algebra work book and I am trying to figure out why the answer to question 5, in the CHapter 7 problem set is -.8.

Here is the question
If l10y-4l>7 & Y,1, which one of the following could be y?

a.-.8
b. -.1
c. .1
d. 0
e. 1

I know how to solve the problem, I am just not sure how the answer is -.8 when the solution are:

Y>11/10 or 1.1 & Y<-3/10 or -.3

I tried to combine the inequality but it didnt make sense, once I changed the signs to go in the same direction.

A favor: Please type out the word "and". There are already a lot of symbols here; using "&" instead of "and" makes the problem annoyingly hard to read.

If l10y-4l>7 & Y,1,

Something isn't right with the last part here ("Y comma 1 comma"). What is it actually supposed to say?

(Fortunately, it doesn't even matter. If you just have the "if |10y - 4| > 7" part, that's enough to solve the problem.)

Y>11/10 or 1.1 & Y<-3/10 or -.3

The red thing should be "or", not "and". (Both of those things can't be true at the same time.)
Either y > 1.1 or y < -0.3.

-0.8 is less than -0.3, so there's your answer.

By the way, please post in the correct folder from now on. If this problem is from a MGMAT strategy guide, it should be posted in the "MGMAT non-CAT math" folder.
This folder is for sources other than MGMAT and GMAT Prep.

Thanks.
