HELP (WHICH MODIFIER)

by carlosutrillas Thu Aug 15, 2013 1:37 pm

Hello, I need help,

I remember one explanation from Ron saying:

"Which" modifier can modify: the noun that immediately precedes the comma or "the noun + prep phrase" that immediatelly preceedes the comma.

So:

Emily´s Dickinson´s letters to Susan, which were written...

This sentence is correct because the "which" refers to "letters to Susan"

There is another sentence from SC manhattan book:

Regina returned the dress to the store, which was torn at one of the seams.

my question is, why we can not say the "which" refers to the "dress" here as it is "noun + prep phrase" (dress to the store)

Thanks

Hi Carlos,
This is the general math forum so not the best spot for this. The good news is that this has already been discussed: emily-dickinson-s-letters-to-susan-huntington-dickinson-t8078.html

If you have more questions please reply to that thread.

Thanks!
