High Verbal Decent Quant - Considering retaking

by andrew.gunn.beck Sat Jun 05, 2010 7:35 pm

Hello,

Just took the exam this morning and scored a 740 46Q/45V. I am very happy with the overall score, but a bit concerned that the quantitative score is below the 80% threshold that I have heard can be a barrier to entry at top schools. I believe that I could improve the score (scored a 49 Q on last MBA practice test) but not sure that it is worth it? I am confident in the other aspects of my background, but would hate for this to be a deciding factor in not gettting accepted.

Friends who are also prepping think that I am crazy for even suggesting that I should retake, but would be interested in outside perspective.

Hi Andrew
I am inclined to agree with your friends! A 740 is a fantastic score and if the other elements of your application are as strong as you indicate, not cracking the 80% on quantitative is unlikely to be the determining factor in your admission at any program. The data through 2008 indicates a 46Q puts you in 77%, which is close enough to 80% that it should not be an issue. Additionally 80% is often cited as a benchmark, but it is by no means a cut-off
