High verbal, low quant

by william.pelzer Mon May 10, 2010 5:14 pm

I will be applying to MS Finance programs for Fall 2011. I recently took the gmat and scored in the 90th percentile in verbal, but only 51st in quantitative. That gives me an overall score that is above the average of all the programs I would like to attend, but I am worried that my low quant score will keep me from being admitted. It would obviously be beneficial for me to retake the test, but would admissions departments deny my admittance because of such a low quantitative score?

Your score is quite uneven. Of course the GMAT will be just one part of the application process, so of course it is possible for someone to still be admitted if they can show the committee that they are a poor test taker and the score is not indicative of their capabilities. Did you earn a very quantitative degree? Did you do very well in quantitative courses in college? Is your job very quantitative? Your performance in these areas can be used as evidence of your ability to handle a rigorous MsF program.....that is, if you don't think you can do better on the exam. Otherwise, you might want to consider retaking it just to put together the strongest application possible.
