#Higher-than-average blood pressure : ETS paper test Q.

by jaymin05 Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:08 am

Studies show that young people with higher-than-average blood pressure and their families have a history of high blood pressure are more likely than others to develop a severe form of the condition.
A.same as above
B.whose families have a history of high blood pressure
C.and a history of high blood pressure runs in the family
D.whose families have a history of high blood pressure running in them
E.with a history of high blood pressure running in their family

OA: B

I was left with choice B and C. I eliminated B, because I thought that the construction, "studies show that young people with X whose Y " is wrong. shouldn't there be an "and" preceding "whose", as in, " ...people with X and whose families...." .

In choice B, whose immediately follows blood pressure. so, I feel that whose wrongly modifies blood pressure, indicating that it is the blood pressure whose families have a history.

Kindly let me know the correct explanation.

Thanx

I agree with you. Bear in mind, ETS does not make GMAT questions, so this was probably meant for another test. In that case, it's either a bad question, or it's based on another test's understanding of grammar. In either case, it's probably not the best study source for you for the GMAT.
