His vs. Him

by FA Sat Mar 15, 2014 1:04 pm

Hello,

I am looking for rule that would help me understand the difference between the usage of of HIM and HIS.

Sentence-1: He doesn't like them and they are not fans of his.
Sentence-2: He doesn't like them and they are not fans of him.

Here is another pair:
Sentence-A: They are no fan of HIS.
Sentence-B: They are no fan of HIM.

Which of the sentences from the two pairs above are correct and what is the rule that we have to remember that would allow us to make corrections in sentences involving a split between HIM and HIS.

Source: I have created these sentences myself to understand the difference between Him and His.

"Fans of X's" is colloquial/informal/spoken language.

"Of" already functions as a possessive, so, in terms of formal structure, "fans of his" is redundant.
