you cannot use "however", "therefore", "furthermore", "nevertheless", etc. as conjunctions in american english.
ex:
X is Y, however A is B --> incorrect (run-on sentence)
X is Y; however, A is B --> correct
same for the others, including "furthermore".
in british english the former would actually be considered correct, but, unfortunately, this is not a test of british english.
