How to improve reading comprehension ability as a non-native

by alicezyk Tue Nov 20, 2012 10:58 am

Hi Instructor. probably Tim :P
I just took my first Gmat test today I got 760.
Sadly 50 on Q and 42 on V.
As I was preparing for Gmat, I have realized one serious weakness of mine, that is I can read, but I cannot comprehend!
I think comprehension ability is crucial to the whole test since once we understand what CR is talking about, it becomes easy. So does SC, the importance of the understanding the meaning of the sentence is without doubt. Let alone the RC part, since I found out that before I started to prepare for GMAT RC, I thought my reading skill is good since I always do well on reading part, and I got full score at TOEFL as well.
But then I realized, toefl reading is way too easy than GMAT RC.
RC articles are articles that I thought I understand, but what I understand is the superficial, or surface meaning of the words. Not the meaning conveyed by the author.
Basically, I just "READ" it, without "Comprehend" the passage.

Not just in Verbal, even in some Q questions, I cannot understand the intended meaning..... ~( >﹏<)

Also, after today's test, I realized once again that GMAT is not a test where skills and strategies can play a part unless you have the foundation.

Thus, I decided to improve my English Reading and Comprehension skills before I take it again.
Here, I need some advice for what kind of material should I read that is most similar to the GMAT material?
Materials that I can learn standard written English from, like in SC.
Also materials that have strong logic.

Any advice from native speaker or non-native speaker is much appreciated!!

Cheers!

i'm not entirely sure what's going on here, but anyone who got a 760 on the GMAT should not be worrying about how to improve further. am i missing something?

Hi. Tim.
Thought I got a not bad score, but as I mentioned above, my reading ability is bad. And I want to improve my reading skills though I am not going to take the test again.

Hi Alice,
Congratulations on an awesome GMAT score, and I am even more impressed that you are interested in self-improvement beyond just what you need for the GMAT. Of course, as our forums are designed specifically to help people prepare for the GMAT, we won't be able to to provide one-on-one coaching to you for improving your general reading skills. However, you are perfectly welcome to continue reading our forums and learning comprehension techniques, and you are of course welcome to post questions if they relate enough to the GMAT to be relevant. Good luck on your continued quest!
