by saintjingjing Tue Sep 06, 2011 9:37 pm

hi, everyone, I am puzzled about the usage of such that, and I do not clearly know the difference between such...that and such that.
And I have read many SC,
like The agreement, the first to formally require industrialized countries to cut emissions of gases linked to global warming, is a formal protocol by which 38 industrialized countries must reduce emissions of these gases by 2012 or face heavy penalties.

A) by which

B) for which

C) under which

D) such that

E) wherein

like
a SC about turtose, limbs , necks invloving the usage of such as

now, I do not know how to learn about the usage of such that, can someone give me a suggestion or give me some tips about the usage of such that and such...that

"Such..that"

Such + Noun + That + Clause
Examples :
It had such enormity that I was left spellbound.
It was such a big house that....

Here "such" is used as an adjectival intensifier of the noun.
It expresses "cause (enormity) and effect (I was left spellbound)".
The "enormity" is the cause of "I was left spellbound".

"Such That"
Used to express purpose or a result.

in "so as to" : There is only ONE subject and one verb.
There is basically one clause.

Subject + verb + So As + infinitive

He fought hard so as to ensure his survival.

in "so that (when used to express purpose)" : Subject could be different or same.
There are basically two clauses.

Subject + verb + so that + subject + verb

I fought hard so that I could survive.
He donated all this money so that the poor could eat.

In the context of meaning "so that / such that / so as to" all represent "purpose"
where as
"so...that" and "such..that" represent "cause ... effect".

The only difference lies in structure. I think so.

thanks in advance, but I see examples from longman, about such that
A rule of correspondence between two sets such that there is a unique element in the second set assigned to each element in the first set

but such that in example refers a explanation about a rule of correspondence.
so why you say such that --->purpose
thanks
