hypothetical subjunctive

by ayushdabas89 Thu May 12, 2011 4:43 pm

i have a doubt regarding the example given on page 112 in the sentence correction strategy guide.

Right: To overcome my fear of germs,i will think about disease as though it were harmless.

its mentioned on page 113 that IF hypothetical then conditional.

wanted to know whether 'i would think about disease as though it were harmless' considered wrong.

Tough one...

First of all, this is not an If/Then construction as you are using "as though" and not if.

Two reasons why I will not use "would":

1. "will" is used when talking about future in present moment and "would" is used when talking about future in past moment

2. "Would" generally needs a condition i.e. "I would go to Thailand if I had the money"

This is what I think...
