Idiom Question

which one is correct?

1. the close resemblance between X and Y
2. the close resemblance of X with Y

Correct answer was 1.
Is there any technique on choosing one over other or 2 is always wrong?

I do not think there is any technique to learn idioms. It is what it is. You have to remember it.

As the earlier poster noted, option 2 is wrong because it's wrong. There's no other explanation that that. Idioms have a particular form to them, and "resemblance of X with Y" is incorrect.
