'If ... Then' Structure

by SeanZ520 Sun Mar 06, 2016 4:26 pm

I have a question on the 'If...Then' structure: My understanding is that if I use simple perfect tense for the clause led by 'then', I can use either present or present perfect tense for the clause led by 'if'. Could anyone help confirm it, and if so what is the difference between the two sentences below?

1. If Stephen Curry makes another 3-pointer, the Golden State Warriors will win the game.

2. If Stephen Curry has made another 3-pointer, the Golden State Warriors will win the game.

Thank you for your help!

as usual with verb tenses, this is all context-based. of these examples, only #1 really makes sense, since (in context) you are talking about things that haven't happened yet.

the tenses in #2 would work if you were talking about something that may or may not have happened already, but of which you just aren't certain yet (and on which something else depends).
e.g.,
If Ben still hasn't completed the project, then he will probably be fired.
