If X^4 + Y^4 = 100 then X must be:

by Guest Fri Jun 22, 2007 2:20 pm

I accidentally did not save my answers and the test was restarted. But there was a question that said:

If X^4 + Y^4 = 100 then X must be:

a) between 0 and 3
b) between 3 and 6
I don't remember choices c-e

The answer was b. I assumed that y = 0 to find out the range of values for x. I don't understand how x can be as large as 6 if Y^4 will always be positive.

Thanks.

The answer choices aren't representing a range of possible values for X. Rather, they are asking you to estimate the answer and find which answer choice X would fall into. So it doesn't mean that X could be 6 - just that X is some number between 3 and 6.

FYI for others reading this - this is not a complete question. There is information missing (there isn't enough presented to be able to eliminate choice A, for example). So, don't study this!
