If x is an integer

by nipunjindal91 Thu Dec 26, 2013 4:19 pm

The following is a data sufficiency question which i came across in the study material provided by Jamboree (a GMAT coaching institute).

Q. If x is an integer, what's the value of x?
1. |x - |x^2|| = 2
2. |x^2 - |x|| = 2

The correct answer is that both the statements together are sufficient to answer the question, but I believe that the 1st statement is sufficient. Please help on the solution.
Thanks.

Hi,
Please give some specifics about your own understanding of this problem.
What do you understand? What don't you understand? What did you already try to do with the statements?
Thanks.

(Presumably, the problem comes with some sort of answer key. So, if you don't post any commentary at all about your own understanding or trouble spots, the best possible response is "Check out the answer key.")

The official answer (you need both of the statements) is correct.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for you reply.
I had the answer to the question but not the solution.

Never mind, I got the solution from one of the other GMAT forums.

Cheers.
