In Action problem#2 Chapter 12 MGMAT SC 12 edition

by ashish1354 Sat Oct 31, 2009 9:27 am

Find the pronouns and antecedents in the following sentences. Correct the errors if any by altering the pronoun(s). Explain the rules violated by the incorrect sentences.

When Norma and her husband read an article about Florida's adorable Manatees, they promised each other that they would one day go there and see one.

For the first they, the answer suggests that it is in a parallel position to Norma and her husband.

I need to know how it is so? (please explain this parallelism specifically as i am non-native speaker)

For the second, they answer suggests that we presume that the antecedent of this they- the people, not the Manatees.
I need to know how can we presume something like this on GMAT?

For One, answer suggests that manatees is the antecedent of one

I need to understand why "article" cannot be the antecedent of one?

When Norma and her husband read an article about Florida's adorable Manatees, they promised each other that they would one day go there and see one.

If we compare the first part of the sentence and the second one, we can see that "Norma and her husband" is the subject of the first part, and "they" is the second part. Because of parallel positioning, "they" refers to "Norma and her husband."

When NORMA AND HER HUSBAND (subject) read an article (verb) about Florida's adorable Manatees (modifier),
THEY (subject) promised each other (verb) that they would one day go there and see one (object).

Often repeated pronouns refer to the same noun. So in this case, the second THEY refers to the same thing as the first THEY.

Because they read a specific article, if they wanted to see the article, the pronoun would be IT. (i.e. it would be stated "they would one day go to Florida and see IT=article.") Since the manatees is referred to as a collective, ONE refers to one of the the collective.

Hope that makes sense.
