by pawanugt Tue Sep 04, 2012 12:31 pm

I have learnt the following :

With Regard to X - Is Idiomatic

Regarding X - Is Idiomatic

In Regard to X - Is Unidiomatic

However, I thought of getting the same confirmed.

Request the experts to help me out.

I came across the below mentioned question in 1000 SC.

165. Because of the business community’s uncertainty about the President’s position in regard to the issue of the budget deficit, an unanticipated rise in interest rates has occurred.

(A) in regard to the issue of the budget deficit, an unanticipated rise in interest rates has
(B) on the deficit, an unanticipated rise in interest rates has
(C) regarding the budgetary deficit, an unanticipated rise in interest rates have
(D) on the deficit, an unanticipated rise in interest rates have
(E) regarding the deficit, an unanticipated rise in interest rats have

After I googled for the explanations, I found some students making this point that "In regard to X is unidiomatic". Specifically I found this explanation on Gmatclub forum.

Would appreciate if you could confirm whether the concerned phrase is Idiomatic.

unless you have come across this specific idiom on an official GMAT question or our SC strategy guide, there is no reason to know what the GMAT's opinion would be of this idiom - and more importantly, no reason to concern yourself with it..

Thanks for your reply Tim.

Would request you to elaborate. I understand that the question above is not an official GMAT question. But I just want to learn the concept of Idioms thoroughly. If I see an option with "In regard to" , one with " Regarding X" and another with "With Regard to X", should I consider it a split and rule out "In regard to X" option ?

Would be extremely grateful if you could help me on this.

i'll say it again: if the GMAT has not tested on this idiom, we can't be sure what their opinion would be of it. in that case, you would avoid ruling out either option and focus instead on a split that will allow you to eliminate options..
