statement 2 contains √(a^2) + √(b^2) and √(c^2) + √(d^2), which are certainly not the same as √(a^2 + b^2) and √(c^2 + d^2).

e.g., if a = 3 and b = 4, then √(a^2) + √(b^2) = 7, while √(a^2 + b^2) = 5.

if you're saying that D is the answer, then you're implying that statement 1 is also sufficient. however, i don't see anything to that effect in your post.
