indian female with 720 gmat score (q 47 , v 42)

by ads09 Fri Jun 07, 2013 2:42 am

Hello,

Yesterday I wrote my gmat for the second time and scored 720(q 47 , v 42). The first time I attempted the gmat on 27 feb 2013 and had scored 650( q47, v34). Although I am happy with the improvement of an overall 70 points with 8 points increase in verbal I am anxious because there is no improvement in the quant score and was wondering whether this is going to hamper my chances of admission into top 20 schools.

My background: I am a 27 years old Indian female with 3 years of work experience in IT industry. I also hold a ME degree in computer science from Cornell University. My GPA was 73.9 % in undergrads and in M.E it was 3.0 out of 4.3 . Sadly due to some family issues I was not able to join a good IT company although I had offer from one and had to work in a local company. Co curriculars are in moderate -good range although not extraordinary. I volunteered in organizing the blood donation camps and have donated blood around 3 times when I was in college and have won group discussion competitions at college level. I have also participated in a marathon .Moreover I am a green peace India member from the past 4 years and learning jazz dance from the past one month.

With this background what are my chances of getting into top 20-25 schools and what are my chances of getting a scholarship? Since my quant scores are not extraordinary should I write gmat for the third time?

Thanks a lot in advance for going through my long post and for all the help :)

Hi there,

Congrats on your score improvement, and on a GMAT score of 720 which is at or above the average scores of admitted applicants at the top MBA programs. You have successfully demonstrated through your GMAT score that you can handle the quantitative and academic rigor of the MBA, and there is no real need to take the exam again. You are already among the highest scoring applicants.

While there are a number of applicants from India with IT backgrounds, you can work towards differentiating yourself through explaining what makes you unique and including stories and anecdotes from your experiences to show what you will contribute to the program. Your various experiences outside of your career, including green peace, jazz, and discussion competitions, etc also strengthen your application. And many programs are looking to increase the number of strong female applicants in their classes too.

At this point, the admissions decisions will likely be made on the other components of your application, in particular the essays are your biggest place to shine and showcase what you'll bring to the MBA and what the MBA will do for you.

You will make the best use of your time and energy to invest in the essay preparation from here on out.

Wishing you good luck on your applications and feel free to check in with any questions.
