Infinitive vs Present participle

by vishalc581 Fri Dec 11, 2015 3:09 am

1) Is there any preference in GMAT SC like

TO read is better than Reading.

2) What is the difference between below 2 sentences :

a) A technique ALLEVIATING pain is growing popular.

In this alleviate is used in present participle form

b) A technique TO ALLEVIATE pain is growing popular.

In this alleviate is used in Infinitive form.

Although both participle and infinitive are modifying noun here.

3)Can an infinitive act as the main verb of the sentence?

what about this sentence....what is the verb?

A plan TO CONQUER the world is in his files.
Thanks & Regards,
Vishal

hi,
this folder is intended to be a place for questions based on GMAT items.

yes, it's called the 'general verbal folder', but the word 'general' is not meant as an invitation for random, source-free questions. rather, 'general' just means 'sources other than MPrep and GMAT Prep'.

also, it's clear that these are NOT random questions; they are clearly inspired by specific items from GMAT sources. thus i find it a bit quizzical that you've stripped away the original source/context (which, more often than not, is absolutely crucial to understanding the usage of ANY construction, in ANY language).

therefore please do the following:
• FIRST, search the forum to see if the original source items are already discussed;
• if they are, then post your question(s) in existing threads;
• if not, then post your questions with the original source items that inspired them, in the appropriate folder(s);
• for items that belong in this folder (= from sources other than MPrep and GMAT Prep, please cite the original source (not another forum or other secondhand source);
• post one problem per thread.

thank you.
