I encountered a question in OG similar to the below sentence -
The Sanchi Stupas in Sanchi, India, were created by the great Emperor Ashoka, who so named them because of xyz reason.
If I change the above sentence to -
The Sanchi Stupas in Sanchi, India, were created by the great Emperor Ashoka, naming them because of xyz reason.
Then the OG gives the below reason for it being wrong.
As the object of a preposition and not the subject of the clause, Ashoka does not work as the noun that the verbal phrase beginning with naming can describe.
Can anyone of the experts please throw some light on the OG explanation ?
