Is the sentence grammatically correct ?

by Aquamarine Mon Sep 24, 2012 11:41 pm

Is this statement grammatically correct ? (Meaning-wise, I know it is not logical)

"The peanut, or groundnut, a legume was probably first cultivated as long as 7,600 years ago in the valleys of Peru."

Thanks

what don't you think is logical about it? it makes perfect sense.

perhaps you don't know that comma + "or" + NAME can be used to give another name for something. e.g.,
Den Haag, or The Hague, is the capital of the Netherlands.

that's what is going on in the sentence: "groundnut" is another name for peanut.

there's only one issue in the sentence: there should be a comma after "a legume". this is a modifier that should be blocked off by commas on both sides.
otherwise, the sentence is fine.
