Is there hope for a low GMAT score?

by sandra85 Tue Nov 20, 2012 7:34 pm

Hi everyone,
I just took the GMAT for the second time, and got 570 (first time I took it I got 560 - AWA 5.5). I definitely feel disappointed with my score but I know I tried my best.
I would like to apply to the following schools: INSEAD, LBS, Oxford, Cambridge, and Berkeley. (I know my score is much lower than the ones they take in).
Do you think that if I have good recommendation letters and essays these schools will invite me for an interview?
I'm almost 27 years, Mexican female with a Bacherlor's degree in Financial Management (92/100 - graduated with honors) from one of the top schools in Mexico. I participated in an exchange program and studied in France for 1 semester (I speak I've been working at a Big 4 for over 3 years and a half (and plan to do so until I begin my MBA). I work in the Transaction Advisory Services department, which has let me acquire both, technical and interpersonal skills. During my first years I focused on valuation and business modelling, as well as financial reporting (impairment testing), but now I'm focusing on buy-side and sell-side due diligence. I think I've done a pretty good job work-wise, I got a double promotion after my first year, and have been promoted the following years too.

Do you think it's possible to offset my low GMAT score with my work experience and academic profile?
Would the b-schools I mentioned be interested in my profile?

I'd really appreciate your comments.

Thanks,
Sandra

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for sharing your profile. I'm sorry to hear about the GMAT. Like you said, you tried your best!

I think your professional experience is strong, but I don't see any additional extracurricular or community leadership experience that would round out your profile. Unfortunately, I think the 570 is going to be considered too low for most of the programs on your list. Do you think there is any way to boost it to a 600+?

What I might suggest is that you select one or two of these programs to apply to, but round out our list with some safety schools that are less competitive and that have lower GMAT means.

Best of luck,
Mili
