is X - Y + 1 greater than X+Y-1

Can someone please provide a solution to this DS problem? source: GMATPrep practice test

Is x – y + 1 greater than x + y – 1 ?

(1) x > 0
(2) y < 0

I picked statement # 2 but wondering why both statements together cannot be the correct answer as well?

Simplifying the question is the key here. It asks "Is x – y + 1 greater than x + y – 1?"
You can rewrite this as x – y + 1 > x + y – 1?
Tidy up the inequality to get 2 > y ?
Answer B.

Of course, the two statements together give enough information, but we don't need statement 1 to help us answer the question as statement 2 is sufficient alone. Go and read the wording for answer choice C in the Official Guide.
