Letter Of Recommendation other than employer

by shreya.samant1 Sun Feb 17, 2013 4:35 am

Hi
I am taking one letter of recommendation of my company's CEO with whom I had worked on an assignment, for 2nd letter - I can take from my current reporting officer, but I have worked with Urja Education System, NGO - for setting up education system in rural area. I had handled major work of setting up computer lab, and not to mention from the scratch along with first internet connection in that village. I want to take letter of recommendation from chairman of the trust, as he knows my abilities so well- seen me fight for every problem related to local community and then successfully completing my task. Can letter given by chairman be accepted, I am asking because they need professional(job related) references. I am little confuse which one to provide for 2nd letter. Please help.
Thanks in anticipation
Shreya

Hi Shreya,

Thanks for your question. I think it would be a little odd not to have a recommendation from your direct supervisor at work. In your case, I would probably take one recommendation from your direct supervisor (who has seen you grow and develop over time professionally) and then decide between the CEO of your company and the NGO recommendation. Most people use two strictly professional recommendations, and will use an NGO/extracurricular recommendation in cases where a 3rd supplemental letter is requested. So, it might be best to use your office recommendations, and then use the supplemental NGO one for the apps that permit it.

Hope that helps,
Mili
