Lots of queries

by resolehtmai Wed Aug 29, 2012 4:19 pm

Pardon me if i am being naive or asking something out of scope. but these are some genuine perceptions ive been worrying about

Background : Am just another IT Engineer from India, 27 yrs, 49 months work ex. Havent had international work ex , but have worked in projects with US clients.

The queries:

1) Can we apply to a majority of US colleges with unofficial or test centre gmat scorecard only, say just a couple of days before deadline?

2) Same question for TOEFL? Do I need my TOEFL official score report for applying to colleges. or I can submit them after the deadline (meaning I will inform the scores before, but am worried about the official scores)

3) Does applying in second or third round of admissions decrease the probablity of getting a seat?

4) Do international students face job difficulties after mba?

5) Can I get a list of some top colleges with 1 yr programme as flagship programme?

6) Are there fixed number of seats present in each rounds of admission?

7) different websites provide ranklists that differ. are there some ranklists which you would recommend we should refer?

8) This one may overlap with previous ones:
Say a college has an application deadline on 30th nov
--can i giv gmat on 25th nov and toefl on 27th nov and still be able to apply?
--can i giv gmat on 25th nov and toefl after the deadline?

9) i have heard that usually there are not placement committees in most of the colleges to coordinate placements and all.is this true?

10) Why do colleges prefer high profile, high performing individuals.if they already are selecting best out of the best, why are they considered great colleges?

11) can a guy like me with just plain workex, average acads, and a gud gmat score say 720(i have got 700 in mgmat tests) get a seat in any one of top tier schools?

I have a lot of queries like these. May be some of these are frequently asked, and some dumb. But I would really appreciate if someone answers.

Hi there,

No need to apologize - these are good questions!.

1. Regarding GMAT/TOEFL. You can submit your raw scores in the application, and send your official scores at the same time. It's okay if the official scores reach them slightly after the deadline, as long as you have reported scores from the actual test in your materials. Just make a note in the application letting them know the official scores are on their way. If you wish to retake the exams after sending your application, you can do so - just let them know in the application that you plan to retake the exam and hope to send higher scores at that time for consideration.

2. The different in acceptance rates between R1 and R2 is marginal, so it will not make much of a difference. However, applying in R3 will greatly decrease your chance of admission, as there are not very many seats left to fill by that point.

3. International students can face some hurdles when recruiting due to Visa issues and all that. I think most do fine, as long as you can secure a job quickly. If you are unemployed for some time after school, you may have to go back to your home country in the event that your student visa expires. But as long as you're on top of recruiting and you're planning ahead, hopefully you'd be fine!

4. INSEAD is probably one of the best known one-year MBA programs. For a list of U.S. programs to consider, see here: http://poetsandquants.com/2012/07/10/gu ... -programs/

5. There is not a fixed number of seats per college per round, though I think there is likely a target number per round that the admissions committee is roughly aiming for. They'll go under or over depending on the quality of candidates in each round, but at the end they need to get close to their total class size target.

6. Rather than recommending one or two ranking lists above others, I suggest you consider all of them in conjunction with one another. See what metrics each one uses and see which ones you care about. I would recommend that you take rankings in general with a grain of salt and that you choose schools based on other criteria as well, such as: curriculum alignment for your desired career path, cultural fit, class size, location, professors, teaching style, etc.

7. There is an admissions committee at each school that is responsible for their class only. I'm not sure if this addresses your question #9 below - please clarify if necessary.

8. Re: question #10 below, I'm not sure I understand the question. Each school is looking to bring a diverse, well-rounded, capable, leadership-oriented students into their class. They view a seat in their class as a privilege that opens up doors, and so they want to give those seats to those that demonstrate they'll make great use of the opportunity and skills acquired. Please clarify your question -- seems to me that great schools would attract great people, and they would want to choose the best fit people they can for their class.

11. It's possible for you to get a seat in a top program, but it depends what else you bring to the table. What makes you a unique candidate? What's your story? You'll have to hone that story and demonstrate why you are different than others.

Hope this helps.

Good luck,
