Low Verbal GMAT - worth retake?

by LillianM599 Fri Jul 21, 2017 2:28 pm

Hi there,

I just took my second GMAT and got 690 - 48Q and 36V. While I was pleased with my quant, this verbal score is really low for me. My last practice test prior to the exam was a 700 - 42Q and 44V. Is it work retaking and risking a lower quant score, but a higher composite? I may also need to wait until round 2 if I retake.

I'm planning to apply to schools in the top 7. Low ivy undergrad, 3 years tier 2 consulting, and a humanities background (international relations).

Hi there - thanks for writing! I would encourage you to retake - the most competitive schools care about "protecting" their GMAT class averages, so a higher overall score can benefit your candidacy. Even if you end up scoring lower on the quant next time, the AdCom will have access to your previous score and will know that you're capable of receiving a 48Q, and will take that into consideration when evaluating your candidacy. And in any case, it never hurts to retake - it shows the AdCom that you have persistence and high standards! Hope that helps :)
