Main clause uses 'will', what verb should the sub clause use

Hi - just have a quick (may be even simple question)

SC: if the main clause uses the verb 'will' and the subordinate clauses begins with an 'if' - should the subordinate clause use the verb 'would', 'were' or 'is/was'? I am guessing it depends on the situation? Can you please help me with which verb to use in each of those situations?

eg:
1) x will happen, only if y happens
2) x will happen, only if y were to happen
3) x will happen, only if y would happen

1 is correct. there are various combinations of verb forms you would use depending on the circumstances, and i would encourage you to look up our section on conditionals in our SC guide for more information..
