by harshasajnani88 Mon Jan 14, 2013 12:36 pm

I am Harsha. Following is my profile with a few queries.

Extra curiculars-
1) participated in a clean mumbai drive
2) Pursued part time modelling for 5-6 months.
3) and a couple of certificates for organizing and participating in college festivals.

Schools like Monaco and INSEEC do accept low GMAT scores but dont know how good they for employment purposes.
Secondly, can I consider doing an MBA from a good school which does not specilize in Luxury in particular, but in marketing?
Pls helpp. Thank you

Regards,
Harsha

Hi Harsha,

Thanks for sharing your profile. I would say that given the nature of your work, a lack of strong extracurricular activities/leadership and your low GMAT score, a top program is not likely. For your reference, you might look at programs like HEC (particularly well known for luxury brand marketing, but likely out of reach) and NYU. These are the types of programs you'd want to aim for given your interests, so it would be good to understand their requirements. Unfortunately, though, these programs would be out of reach for your profile.

I would really encourage you to research programs in Germany if you are interested in luxury cars. I can't claim to know too much about them, but it seems like it's worth researching. Of course you'll want to target programs that accept students with your range of GMAT scores.

As for the two programs you mentioned - you can find out about their placement statistics either on their website or by calling their career services offices. That way you can see where students from those programs go on to work after the MBA.

Best of luck,
Mili

Harsha,

The average GMAT score at NYU is 720. At HEC it's 689. At SDA it hovers around 660.

Furthermore, store manager experience is great and leading teams in that environment is also great, but it is a very different type of experience compared to leading within a corporate team, setting vision, managing Fortune 500 clients, etc. Store management experience is not seen as equal to investment banking, consulting, marketing, etc. experience as far as business schools are concerned. That said, you can try to turn this into a unique asset (being on the front lines, etc.).

Good luck,
Mili

Hello,

Sorry, could you clarify your question? Are you trying to find out if admissions committees favor women coming from government backgrounds? I wouldn't say government experience is favored - it would fall into the category of 'non-traditional' and so would be looked upon as unique. But it would depend a lot on what your impact, role in the government was. Being a woman is an advantage, given the small size of the female applicant pool! But, it's not enough - you'll still need great scores, leadership experience, etc.

The average cost of an MBA varies highly. Best that you look at the financial aid sections of the programs you are interested in to see what they estimate the cost to be. Remember that in addition to tuition/fees, you have to pay for housing/cost of living, and you have the opportunity cost of missing out on salary for those two years.

Thanks,
Mili
