MGMAT SC Guide || Page 84 || Using the latest technology

by FA Fri Mar 07, 2014 7:43 am

Hi,
I have a quick question about two sentences on page-84 of Manhattan GMAT SC Guide (5th Edition):

Wrong-1: Using the latest technology, the problem was identified.

Wrong-2: The problem was identified, using the latest technology.

Question: Would any of the above sentences be correct if the comma is left out? In my opinion, the second sentence will become correct if the comma is deleted.

Yeah. If there's no comma, then "using" can be used as, essentially, an equivalent of "with". (In this case, you shouldn't think of it as "__ing" anymore, since it doesn't follow the same rules.)

As evidence, there's an OG problem about building solid walls using just mud or clay. It's somewhere in the early part of the SC chapter (I don't have the book on me right now).

Thanks Ron!

Just a quick question:

Considering my original post, are you referring to "Wrong-1", "Wrong-2" or Both?

Talking about #2.

If you tried to take the comma out of #1, it would just become unreadable. (GMAC would not present you with such a sentence.)
