Modifers

by asth678 Sat Jan 05, 2013 11:31 am

Foundation GMAT Verbal Book - Pg 101

1.The two companies made an illegal agreement where they agreed to raise prices significantly on the first of the year.

I understood that where is wrong cause it can only be used for places but would when be appropriate here instead?

2.Although Balaji managed to eat 75 hot dogs with incredible speed, the hot-dog- eating contest trophy ultimately went to another competitor.

According to the explanation given in the book since the first part of the sentence answers its own question it isnt a warmup..Is there a rule that modifiers have to ask a questions?

Wouldn't the Balaji sentence be wrong since as the 1st part of the sentence which is a modifier doenst modify the hot dog eating contest.Modifiers should modify what comes immediately after the comma-Right?

I am not sure whether 'when' makes sense but 'in which' makes sense to me. 'When' is used for only 'time' and I don't think here we are making any reference to timing.

Here, "Although Balaji managed to eat 75 hot dogs with incredible speed" part is subordinate clause.

Correct usage of Although is as follows,

Although + 1st Clause (S+V) + Comma + 2nd Clause (S+V).

Both the clauses must contrast/opposite to each other.

Examples,

Although I left home early, I still got to work late.

Although I had not prepared well for the exam, I still got perfect score.

Now, check out your sentence and you will find that as written it is correct.

Although Balaji managed to eat 75 hot dogs with incredible speed, the hot-dog- eating contest trophy ultimately went to another competitor.

thanks Willy. i will mention that "when" could actually work in the first sentence. it changes the meaning of the first wording course, but that doesn't make it wrong..
