by aayush333 Thu Dec 29, 2011 9:18 am

Ms. Wright tries to get inside Iran to understand how it works, the role it has played in the Middle East and its intricate relationship with the United States, which is complex and depends heavily on understanding of the Farsi language.
(A) which is complex and depends
(B) because it is complex and depends
(C) but they are complex and depend
(D) which are complex and depend
(E) a task that is complex and depends

Plz explain all the options.....

The correct answer is E.
A, B, C, and D all use a pronoun ("which," "it," or "they"), and all these pronoun are ambiguous.

Ms. Wright tries to get inside Iran to understand how it works, the role it has played in the Middle East and its intricate relationship with the United States, which is complex and depends heavily on understanding of the Farsi language.

(A) which is complex and depends
which in this case refers only to the United States

(B) because it is complex and depends
The it is ambiguous
(C) but they are complex and depend
Ambiguous Pronoun they and but subordinator is not required in this context
(D) which are complex and depend
which again refers only to United States and are adds a subj-verb agreement error
(E) a task that is complex and depends
This choice is best because it eliminates the ambiguous Pronouns and the Correct use of Verb "is"

Hi guys this is my very first post, so please pardon me for any errors:-)

The problem faced by most of us in this question must be between options A, D and E - "which" has been used in two options (both are incorrect) while the correct option actually turns out to be E...

Here's the hitch - Please note that which should always be preceded by a noun and not a clause or phrase (as in the option numbers A and D)... Options B and D use pronouns "it" and "they" without a clear reference to whom these pronouns are referring to...Option E clearly takes "a task --> that is", eliminating any ambiguity....as isodhi has already explained very nicely...

Hope this helps!
