Multiple past perfect tenses

Hi,

Can someone explain to me how to handle when there are multiple past perfect tenses in a given phrases? In another words, when there are two past perfect tenses in phrases, how do we know which event occurred first? (comparing the two past perfects)

Can you give an example of when you have seen this?

First of all, the past perfect is used in comparison with a simple past tense to show the proper time relationship. Now, you might see an extension of that past perfect, also leading up to a simple past tense. For example:

The players had finished the game, and the fans had left the stadium by the time it started to rain.

In the above sentence, the two past perfect tenses each indicate that that action happened before the action in the simple past tense (started).
