My GMAT Profile evaluation

by singh.vishalk09 Sun Jan 19, 2014 7:21 am

Hi there,
I need your help in GMAT profile evaluation. I finished my GMAT exam 3-4 days back and my details are as below:

1- GMAT Score: 720 (Q49/V40/AWA N.A./ IR8)
2- GPA (83% from NITs in India, Highest given was 90% in my class and NITs are considered among the best Engg colleges after IITs in India)

3- 10 Years of work exp. in Manufacturing industry (4.5 years international exp. in Saudi Arabia), Presently working as Product Manager at All India level basis.

4- As far as community services are concerned, I come from a village and my whole education before engineering has been in Non-english medium school and I support the students of the same school in different ways.

I have three questions for you,

(i)- I am targeting mainly Harward, Wharton,Stanford, Kelloggs, MIT, Booth, Tuck, Yale and Kelley school of business

what are my chances in these colleges, or in which 5 colleges, I will have strongest possibility of getting in.

(ii)- Will reating GMAT and increasing score to lets say 740-750 will increase my likelihood of admission in given colleges with reaspect to my profile.

(iii)- is IR8 will be helpful in Round 1 and Round 2 of colleges which will start in July-aug 2014.

My Mail ID: singh.kush09@yahoo.com

Regards, thanks for your help,
Vishal

Hi Vishal,

Thanks for posting, and congrats on a solid GMAT score, at or near the average GMAT score at the world's top b-schools. First of all, I would not stress over re-taking, when you have a 720. The difference in the admissions decision that increasing slightly could have, is minimal, and you could better invest your time and effort on the rest of your application and particularly in your essays.

Your academics are solid as well with the 83%, so with that and the GMAT you have demonstrated that you can handle the academic side of b-school.

10 years of work experience is quite a bit, and more than average... have you considered exec programs at all with that level of experience? It's not unheard of to aim for the full time programs, but just be sure you have an explanation for why NOW, at this point in your career, the MBA is the best path for you.

Tough to assess your work experience in depth based on the info we have at hand so far, but the adcomm would look for evidence of leadership and teamwork, at results you obtained or contributed to, how you made an impact, etc. In terms of the schools you mentioned, certainly Stanford is the most competitive on the list, with the highest average GMAT score AND a smaller than average class size. Most of the schools on your list are very competitive and challenging to get into. Kelley is less so and I would think you'd have good chances there. The others will not be easy, but not impossible either... a lot depends on the details of your work experience; your essays and how you convey what you'll bring to the class; your recommendations & potential interview; and your explanation of your rationale for the MBA and what you'll do with it after.
