My profile

by topmbaaspirant Mon Apr 12, 2010 2:38 pm

I am a 28 year old Indian Female with the following profile. I would like some insight as to my chance for a part time program in Booth, Ross and Kellogg....

GMAT - 670 V35, Q 47, AWA 5.5 overall 85th percentile
Undergrad GPA-3.9
Grad GPA (M.S in Engineering) - 4.0
Work Experience: 5 years

Certifications: PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt, Business Communication
Awards: Close to 10 distinguished awards for excellence from the company I am working at...got a personal letter of appreciation from the CIO of my company (~6000 associates)

Extra-curricular: PM Mentor at the local chapter, Volunteer for a commission at the office of the Mayor

Promotions: None...stuck in the same role due to immigration application! But within my role have been promoted 2 levels in 5 years...need to wait one more year to hit the top level in my role.

Leadership activities in my role: day-in-day out dealing with people!

Current Industry: IT

My research: I started my research for my master degree and have published 5 papers so far. My goal is to take that research to the next level. I have found a new way to achieve a goal in my research and am working on a patent application. I am also planning to start a company to market my idea and fund my research.

Why MBA? I don't have any experience putting together a business and closing deals...now that I have reached this far, I need an MBA to take me through this dream

Why now? I have been busy figuring out more about my research and just now attained a stage where I can concentrate on the business perspective.

I am not planning to apply until Summer 2011...by then I can shore up more 'Women in Leadership' type of opportunities...

Does my application stand a chance for part-time programs in Booth, Ross and Kellogg?

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. You may be a bit on the young side for part-time or executive education programs with 5 years of work experience - although you will wait until next year to apply. I would double check the range for average age and average years of work experience for the schools that you are interested in. My guess is that you’ll still be toward the lower end of the range when you apply. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t apply, but it may be a bit more important for you to demonstrate your leadership experience, expertise in your field and how you can contribute to your class.

I think that you should refine your reason for applying to business school. Your applications will likely ask about your professional goals and you’ll need to be a bit more specific than, "I can now concentrate on the business perspective." Part time programs, in particular, are not designed to be exploratory periods. They are really tailored to people who have worked for some time, want to stay in their industry but need to refine or supplement their skills to move their career forward. Knowledge of what that career goal might look like is pretty important in a part-time or executive education program. Your volunteer work, career progression and management role and entrepreneurial activities are great foundations for a strong application. I think that your GMAT score is okay for a part-time program, but I would double check how close you are to the average score (as well as whether you fall in the middle 80% range) for the specific programs you plan to apply to.

You should not feel compelled to pursue "women in leadership" activities. I’m not even sure what that really means. You should probably look for ways to demonstrate your leadership skills, but I would look for opportunities that are readily available and interesting to you. Your leadership does not have to focus on women just because you are a woman, if that is what you meant by "women in leadership type of opportunities." Best of luck in your application next year!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis

Hello Akiba,

Thanks for the prompt response.

Here are the stats from the schools:

Booth:

Work experience: Avg 5 years
Age: Avg age is 29 yrs
Average GMAT:688
Median GMAT:690
Middle 80% GMAT: From: 610 To: 740

Ross:

Work experience: 7.5 years
Age: Avg age is 32
Average GMAT:656
Middle 80% GMAT: From: 590 To: 740

I would appreciate a little more explanation about part-time MBA to help hone skills for the current job...if I wanted to pursue what I do now (my research, patent, own company and such), and hone my skills for that...will that be looked differently?

I guess I am trying to get my thoughts straight for the application before filling in the gaps...

From the above stats, looks like if I apply next year that will help a little with experience and age and such?

Hello,

Yes, I’d agree with you that if you apply next year you’ll be very close to the average (at least in terms of years of work experience and the GMAT score) for both of those programs. I’m not exactly sure what you are asking for when you ask for more of an explanation of the part-time MBA program. Typically, part-time MBA programs are designed for working professionals. The students’ employers are often expected to express a willingness to support them in their MBA program (I don’t mean financially) so that their supervisor and colleagues understand that they may need to miss some days at work or leave a bit early to take care of homework or class projects. Each program operates differently in terms of logistics. Some programs offer classes at night or on weekends, while other programs expect students to be able to attend classes on Fridays.

I think that it might be useful for you to attend information sessions and/or speak with participants in part-time MBA programs so that you understand what the workload is like so that you can determine what is realistic for you in terms of pursuing all of the interests that you have mentioned, while attending a part-time MBA program. Best of luck!

Sincerely,

Akiba Smith-Francis
