Need help with next step after 2nd gmat test...

by weishao Sun Apr 11, 2010 12:41 am

Ok, came back from test and got a 720. The breakdown is 49/39 - both 87% for a total 94%. My last test was 640 (48/28)

Now here are a couple of questions:

1. My ultimate reach would be Yale. My under gpa(EE & comp. Eng) is 3.0 and grad(Master Comp Sci) gpa is 3.3. What does those and a 720 get me in terms of colleges? I understand essays/interviews/letter of rec. count but what are your honest opinions on my chances?
2. Do I need to retake the exam? I think i am at the point for Math where "weird" questions might get me but others prob wont. Verbal obvious could improve but i think 11 point increase from 28 is pretty decent and until i get my verbal percentages i am not sure where i need to improve. I am not sure what material i could use now besides just doing more and more practice problems....

thanks and let me know if i still need to take another test or should just sit tight?

Target schools(leaning into FT MBA with concentration on E-commerce, finance, management):
Yale <- first choice because family lives there (so less burden financially)
Johnson
stern
cornell
Others are in consideration...

I am more interested in schools on the East(family lives) and West coast(love CA) plus schools in illinois.

i went through the GMAT scores and 720 seems to be the mean in many of the top schools so i "barely" made it there... I hope colleges will look at my Master degree GPA more since it is more recent... Can i please get a profile evaluation and possibly some reasonable target schools to add to the list?

Sorry i cant find a way to edit the previous posts...

Hello,
Thank you for your inquiries. In terms of the GMAT, your first score (720) is very good. There is no need for you to retake the test since the overall score and the percentages will make you very competitive for your target school. In addition, your undergraduate and graduate GPAs are high enough that you don’t need to worry about the scoring higher than a 720 GMAT score. So, good news, you don’t need to retake the test.

I am not sure about whether business school is the right next step for you. That is a very personal answer and there are no objective answers to that question. This has a lot to do with your personal and professional goals. You may need to do a bit of self reflection, career research and school research to determine whether business school is right for you. In addition to reviewing websites for the business schools that interest you, I recommend attending information sessions so that you can ask questions about the issues that are most important for you.

Once you determine whether you even want to go to business school, I think that it's smart to come up with a robust list of schools that you want to apply to. I'd say that 4-6 schools is a manageable number of applications to submit at one time. I can't really provide a list of schools for you to consider (plus you already seem to have quite a good list) without knowing more about your professional background and future goals.

Good luck!

Sincerely,
Akiba Smith-Francis
