not only x but also x - parallelism question

by samarpan.bschool Wed Mar 02, 2011 9:31 am

Which sentence is correct?

A. Undergoing liposuction is to commit to a new life style not only because participants will no longer be permitted to eat large portions of food at one sitting or consume foods rich in sugar or fat, but also because this will lead to harmonal imbalances

B. Undergoing liposuction is to commit to a new life style not only because participants will no longer be permitted to eat large portions of food at one sitting or consume foods rich in sugar or fat, but also because doing so will lead to harmonal imbalances

As per my understanding, in 'not only X but also Y', X and Y should be both grammatically and structurally parallel. Here X is a clause and so Y should also be a clause.

However it looks to me that, in both the sentences', we have Y a clause. Can any instructor clarify this?

Thanks

i'm not sure what your concern is. yes, if X is a clause, Y must also be. this is the case in both sentences. to answer your initial question though, neither sentence is correct. "Undergoing liposuction is to commit" is invalid..
