Not only X but also Y & Not only X but Y

by Saurabh Malpani Wed May 02, 2007 11:18 am

The Question if from Paper Tests Code 55 Section 6 question 20th

The skill and the precision of the Anasazi, ancient inhabitants of the Southwest, in measuring the movements of the Sun and Moon is evidenced not only at Chaco Canyon but at a number of other sites.

(A) in measuring the movements of the Sun and Moon is evidenced not only at

(B) in measuring the movements of the Sun and Moon are evidenced not only at

(C) in measuring the movements of the Sun and Moon is evidenced at not only

(D) to measure the movements of the Sun and Moon is evidenced at not only

(E) to measure the movements of the Sun and Moon are evidenced not only at

My question here is not about the correct answer but about the use of
"Not Only X but Y" & "Not Only X but ALSO Y" the difference betwene the constructions? I have seen many questions in OG where the questions have been qrong because of Faulty construction of Not Only X but also Y "

What's the correct form ..? when can we ommit "ALSO" in what kind of constructions? What's the clue ...?

Thanks

Sorry this got overlooked earlier! I don't think you would see a question like this on the current-form GMAT (which is why it's not a great idea to use the very old paper-based tests).

The correct idiom is "not only... but also." I haven't seen a CAT question in which they break this rule.

Dear Starcy,

I found following question in Manhattan GMAT CAT test.

Not only did Christopher Columbus refuse to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, he also pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, finally receiving approval and financing from King Ferdinand of Spain in 1492 after several rejections.

(A)Not only did Christopher Columbus refuse to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, he also pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, finally receiving
(B)Not only did Christopher Columbus refuse to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, also pressing relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia; he finally received
(C)Christopher Columbus not only refused to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, but he pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, and finally receiving
(D)Christopher Columbus not only refused to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat but pressed relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, finally receiving
(E)Not only refusing to accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat but pressing relentlessly for royal support for his westward voyage to Asia, Christopher Columbus, finally receiving

I think here we have to break the rule of "Not Only......But Also"

Please explain when to break and when not.

It looks like the answer to the original question may have been B, but as Stacey suggests this type of problem doesn’t show up on the GMAT anymore so it’s probably best just to ignore this one..

The best rule for when to omit the "also" is when you are forced by all five answer choices to do so, but of course that isn’t helpful in determining the answer, so you have to look elsewhere.. :)
