Numbers in comparisons

Hi,

Pg 256 of the SC guide, Numbers in Comparison, states that when relating quantities by multiplication use "times" and "as...as..."

Is there ever an exception to this rule? Specifically, is the following construction acceptable? If so, why and if not then can you please help me with the right construction?

Studies indicate that among distinguished artists manic amnesia and major depression are ten to twelve times more prevalent than in the population at large.

It's totally fine, and both can be used. i think the point the guide is trying to make is that they definitely have different meanings and they are not interchangeable. If i have 3 times as many pogs as you have, i cannot change it to say i have 3 times more pogs than you have, because that would mean i have 4 times as many..
