OG Containing Own SC Errors in non-SC Sections?

by imperial.franco Fri Jul 18, 2014 9:10 pm

Quantitative Review, 2nd Ed, #154 of Data Sufficiency:

I've been seeing a lot of SC errors on non-SC sections of the OG. Here is an example:

"A survey of employers found that during 1993 employment costs rose 3.5 percent, where employment costs consist of salary cost and fringe benefit costs..."

Doesn't the sentence contain a modifier error? Shouldn't it be, "..3.5 percent, in which employment costs..?"

According to MGMAT SC Guide, we can only use "where" to modify places, while we can use "in which" to modify time (modifier chapter) and to modify places (idiom chapter of "where")

I've beens seeing a lot of similar SC errors (usually with respect to modifiers) in other sections (CR, RC, and Quant). Can someone shed light on this?

Hi,

I encountered a similar mistake in the verbal review..

Refer to qn #36 in the CR section of OG verbal review 2nd edition..
It says"........................An asthma attack occurs when the messenger molecules are activated unnecessarily, in response to harmless things like pollen or household dust....................."

As per my understanding, here the "like" is placed wrongly. It should be "such as" since it is providing examples of harmless things.

I would assume that the errors would be fixed in the forthcoming edition of the books...

Till then, it is only helping us improve our SC skills! :)

regards

The official SC problems go through several rounds of editing by a highly skilled team of editors. That process costs thousands of dollars per SC question.
Remember, an SC question is a single sentence. So, basically, $1000's per sentence.

When you think about the issue in these terms, it should be obvious why the other sections are not edited as meticulously as the SC problems are.

And, this:

Well, no. In this case, the text makes more sense"”"”and is much more descriptive"”"”with "like".

We're not talking about "random things that are harmless". We're talking about harmless things that are small enough to float around in the air and to make it into the lungs, where they proceed to trigger asthma attacks.
...in other words, things consisting of small particulate matter"”"”things LIKE pollen and dust.

Wow! Now this makes me value my OG book more. Haha

Anyway, thanks for this, Ron. I actually thought I was missing out on some important nuances/exceptions already when I saw the errors in non-SC portions.

Nope.

Priorities are a thing. Make sure yours are the right ones.
