Our Cat is Cuter than those in the shelter

by vibhusethi Sun Dec 06, 2009 1:22 pm

Hello all.
This is from the MGMAT SC book. There are no answer choices, you are expected to correct the error in the sentence.
The incorrect sentence is
"Our Cat is Cuter than those in the shelter".
The correct sentence given is
"Our cat is cuter than the cats in the shelter".
My question is this:
Is it OK to say
"Our cat is cuter than the one's in the shelter" ?

it is not.
"... one's in the shelter" translates to "... the cat(s) belonging to the person in the shelter".
That apostrophe alters the meaning altogether.

yeah, as the poster above said, you'd have to kill the apostrophe. however, punctuation within words is not tested on the gmat, so you don't have to worry too hard about that one.

there aren't a ton of examples for "one/ones", but i do believe that your version (without the apostrophe) would probably be acceptable.

No. Replacing "that" with "cat" gives you "cat of in the shelter" which is wrong. Also, if you wanted a pronoun here, you'd probably use "the one" rather than "that". If you were comparing one cat to one cat (which they aren't doing in the original sentences), you could do any of the following:

Our cat is cuter than the cat in the shelter
Our cat is cuter than the one in the shelter
Our cat is cuter than the shelter's
Our cat is cuter than the shelter's cat.

Could ' Our cat at home is cuter than that in the shelter.' be correct?
Thank you!

In principle it's okay, but it implies that there's only one cat in the shelter and we know which cat is being talked about. I'd say that the sentence 'Our cat is cuter than the one in the shelter.' is clearer.
