Parallel Elements

by Milanproda1 Fri May 20, 2011 7:14 pm

After watching Ron Purewals recorded class on Parallelism, I got the idea that the parallel elements that come after the parallel marker should not be changed? I am not sure if that is set in stone, but I got the idea from the class and it made a lot of sense.

However, when I attempted to answer the in action problems on parallelism in chapter 4 of the SC book, I saw a few questions in which the parallel elements that came after the marker (and) was changed. The question that stuck out the me was number 3 on page 59.

Many teachers choose to seek employment in the suburbs rather than than facing low salaries in the city. (Correct: rather than FACE)

Thanks

in the real problems, this will not be an issue, because there will be an underline.
the things within the underline may be changed; the things outside the underline may not be changed. therefore, if the first element of the parallel structure is outside the underline, then you have to change the second element, and vice versa.

personally, i don't understand why the strategy guide includes exercises in which you fix sentences -- i'm going to submit the idea of removing these in the next edition, because fixing sentences is not a skill that is necessary for this test. as long as you can recognize what is right and what is wrong, you will be fine.
