Parallelism/Ellipsis question

by vickychaudharycat Sun Sep 02, 2012 11:36 am

Is the parallelism correct in the sentence ".... one class in English and one[class] in Physics"? Ideally ellipsis omits either the leading words from a sentence or trailing words from a sentence. In the sentence above, the omitted word needs to be places between the second clause to make sense.

A. Is it a valid case of ellipsis?

There is an SC in which i could narrow down to 2 options:

1. The student has skipped all his classes except for one class in English and one in Physics.
2. Except for one English class and one Physics class, the student has skipped all of his classes.

option 2 is correct choice.

B. Is choice 1 incorrect because it has invalid ellipsis(as i mentioned above) OR because it uses "all his classes" rather than "all of his classes " ?

parallelism seems correct to me.

though not sure but I think as said by you above OF is required in sentence 1. it sounds better wit the use of "OF" in sentence 1

I don't think ellipsis is a problem here:

Check this example:
Jane ordered an ice cream and jill (ordered) a fruit juice.

Here you can omit "ordered" between jill and fruit juice.

from what source did you get this?

nothing is wrong with either choice. the omission in #1 is fine.

#2 is a little worse, because of the unnecessarily long distance between "except for one english class..." and "all of his classes" (note that these are right next to each other in #1). however, that's not the sort of thing that would be a fatal error.

treat this source with suspicion from now on.
