Parallelism is not mandatory for pronouns.

by milan.monappa Tue May 29, 2012 9:46 am

Hi,

I was going through some blogs and found out parallelism is not mandatory if there are pronouns

For ex: Countries that invest heavily in military and thus gain some kind of forced hegemony in world affairs don’t get the
respect that they would otherwise get.
Here THAT is a pronoun referring to countries. So here, after that word AND, the word THAT is not compulsorily
repeated.

Please someone clarify my doubt.
PS:Sorry if i posted my question in wrong place.

Thanks and Regards

technically your observation is correct, but you could extend that to say that parallelism is not *always* necessary for *any* specific part of speech. what you really need to do is focus on what's important with parallelism: don't look for parallel elements, because this is an easy way for the GMAT to set a trap for you along the lines of what you allude to. instead, look for parallel markers and then figure out what things the parallel markers are joining based on what part of speech shows up to the right of the parallel marker..
