Parallelism question

by usmanqd Tue Jan 01, 2013 6:23 pm

Of all the wild animals in their area, none was more useful to the tribes in Indus Valley than the black-tailed deer: it was a source of meat, and its hide was used for clothing, its antlers and bones for tools, and its sinews and gut for bindings and glue.

Above is a correct sentence that I have sort of modified from the official gmac version. Can someone please help explain how parallelism is maintained in this sentence given that it uses "and" twice?

it was a source of meat, and its hide was used for clothing, its antlers and bones for tools, and its sinews and gut for bindings and glue.

To me, it is two part sentence. First part talks about entire deer as a source of meat. The second part (joined by and) talks about uses of certain body parts.

The sentence talks about uses for clothing, tools, and bindings & glue. The second and is used as conjunction here.

Although debatable, I expected 'respectively' at the end of sentence to suggest that sinews were used for bindings and gut for glue.

Can you please let us know what is problem no. in official guide?

I don't think sentence as written is correct. If I am not wrong, you have modified it from the original question #35 of OG-12 (page no. 93, Diagnostic test). The correct version (option D) of that problem is as follows,

Unlike Mesopotamian cities, in which buildings were arranged haphazardly, the cities of the Indus Valley all followed the same basic plan: houses were laid out on a north-south, east-west grid, and houses and walls were built of standard-size bricks.

And the construction after 'Colon' is entirely different what you have written in the modified sentence. Let us know if you have modified it from another official problem.

I had modified this question from a gmac paper exam published in 1995.

I think i figured it out.

below the comma before the and indicates that there is a new clause.

it was a source of meat, and its hide was used for clothing, its antlers and bones for tools, and its sinews and gut for bindings and glue.

Even I have figured out where I was wrong. Thank you for the reply. After highlighted AND, three parts are made parallel. The sentence as written by you is right. Nice question.
