parallelism

Source : OG 10th Edition Q 3

[deleted because problem is from a banned source - see below]

OA is B .Please explain .OE says defending ,acting ,sounding ,scouting and roosting are parallel. Then why 'and' is used twice here . This is not a list of type A ,B, C, D & E.Please explain .

One more (Same source Q 7)

[deleted because problem is from a banned source - see below]

OA is C . The structure 'the more .... the greater is ' is fine . But the phrase 'the greater their intellectual......' does not have any working verb while the clause 'the more the children ....' has the verb 'use'. It is confusing please explain .

hi nidhi,

About the first sentence:
The option B is correct because bat caves have 2 duties:
1)Defending the Entrance
2)Scouting outside the cave for new food and roosting sites.

Acting as sentinels and sounding a warning is how the bat caves are defending. It is not the part of the duties performed by the bats. Its an additional information provided via usage of comma of how bats defend the entrance. Even if you remove that part of the sentence the whole sentence structure will still make sense. And the option B is right because it maintains the parallelism in that structure using the words 'acting' and 'sounding'

About the 2nd sentence:

Its all about the idiom usage: The more... the _er: eg: The more you study, the better score you get.
I really don't get what you mean by 'working verb'.Do let me know if you get your ans.In all other options i saw option C has the best answer.

Nidhi,

I think Abhilash has mentioned appropriately why the usage of 'the more the children use...the greater their intellectual advantage' is correct.

Just to add a point to his explanation, I think the answer C is right because in this option, the working verb that you enquired about is implicit. The sentence could very well be rewritten as -

The more the children use both Spanish and English, the greater (is) their intellectual advantage...

In this case, the working verb 'is' is implicit and does not require mention in the sentence explicitly. I think the reason behind this is something that Abhilash has already detailed above - idiom usage.
