Parallelism

by gmatwork Wed Oct 24, 2012 1:48 pm

If we have a sentence such as below -

A car that is red and that is broken belongs to John.

Is the above sentence correct - in terms of parallelism? Please ignore brevity.

If we have two parallel clauses in a sentence . The first clause begins with "that" then is it essential that the second clause also begin with "that"?? Do we need to repeat the word "That" or can do without repeating "that" in the second clause and just say - A car that is red and broken belongs to John.

Will this version be correct? ( Ignore brevity)

Let's say -

Many of the dioxins that are currently uncontrolled and North Americans are exposed to come from pollution.

For the above sentence do we need to repeat "that" after "and" ????? OR is it fine not to repeat "that" and still have parallelism.

you do not have to repeat the "that". the fact that this question is even asked in this way suggests that you are going about parallelism backwards. you should NEVER start to the left of your parallel marker(s) to find the first parallel element, because there is no way of knowing where the sentence breaks into two parallel parts. start to the right of the parallel marker and see what kind of construction you have, then take a look to see if you can find a match on the left..
