Past Participle Usage

The growth of the railroads led to the abolition of local times, which was determined by when the sun reached
the observer’s meridian and differing from city to city, and to the establishment of regional times.

OA:determined by when the sun reached the observer’s meridian and differing

Could you please help me in explaining why we used '-ing' participle instead of '-ed' participle for 'Differing'.

How is parallelism maintained in above sentence? It's really difficult for me to identify where to use '-ing' participle and where to use '-ed' participle.

Also, please let me know the difference between the usage of '-ed' verb and past participle.

You can't post problems in this folder without giving the original source of the problem -- i.e., the company or author that first produced the problem (= not a forum or other secondhand source).
If you don't know the original source, then i'm sorry, but you can't post the problem here.

This rule applies to MGMAT problems as well. There are over three thousand problems in our database, so we can't possibly recognize all of them.
(This is also the wrong folder for MGMAT problems, which belong in the MGMAT CAT or MGMAT non-CAT folder.)

We'll have to kill this thread within a week if the original source of the problem is not posted. Thanks.
