Pecan growers get a high price for their crop when

by aditya8062 Thu Feb 14, 2013 11:53 am

Pecan growers get a high price for their crop when
pecans are comparatively scarce, but the price drops
sharply when pecans are abundant. Thus, in high-yield
years, growers often hold back part of their crop in
refrigerated warehouses for one or two years, hoping
for higher prices in the future. This year's pecan crop
was the smallest in five years. It is nonetheless quite
possible that a portion of this year's crop will be held
back, since _____________ .

(A) each of the last two years produced record breaking
pecan yields

(B) the quality of this year's pecan crop is no worse
than the quality of the pecan crops of the
previous five years

(C) pecan prices have not been subject to sharp
fluctuations in recent years

(D) for some pecan growers, this year's crop was
no smaller than last year's

(E) the practice of holding back part of one year's
crop had not yet become widespread the last
time the pecan crop was as small as it was this
year

the OA is A .but i feel that D is a strong contender .here is my reasoning: the argument wants the reason as to why this year's portion of crop will also be stored although this year's produce is lowest in five years .
now what D does is it opens a window for a possibility that because if for some pecan growers ,this year's crop was no smaller than last year's so that means these pecan growers had a produce same as last year's that means that these some growers had record breaking produce even this year ,although the total produce may have been less this year ,so these growers might hold back some portion

moreover i feel that in some way even A is trying to say the same thing as D
after all what is A saying ?....by saying that each of the last two years produced record breaking pecan yields its effectively saying that even this year ,although the produce is low , there might be a case that produce is sufficient and hence concluding that a portion of produce might be stored

Ron plz help me understand as what and where my interpretation of D going wrong
thanks and regards
